Currently, no light-weight production direct fuel injection systems exist that are appropriate for small UAV heavy fuel engines. JM Harwood identified this as the highest priority technology gap in the development of small heavy fuel UAV engines and is developing a miniature Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) system.
JM Harwood successfully demonstrated a bench-top proof-of-concept miniature Direct Fuel Injection system in September 2009.

An injector, which will produce injection pressures approaching 3000 psi with extremely fine resolution at part throttle and idle operation, is scheduled to for a heavy fuel engine demonstration in 2010.
